Did you know that there are over 6500 living languages in the world? While some languages might overlap a bit, they are all unique in their own way. One could say the same thing about the cuisines of the world.
Luckily, Seattle is home to many different ethnic cuisines that are bound to tantalize your taste buds. Next time you go for some retail therapy at the Northgate Mall, take a detour a few blocks down and treat yourself to a cuisine that may become your new favorite.
The Indo Café: Taste of Indonesia sits in a nondescript strip mall as so many good Asian eateries do. Tucked in the very back, it’s a gastronomic treasure waiting to be discovered. Try the Ayam Goreng Penyet, a crushed fried chicken cooked to crispy perfection. Or the Ayam Goreng Mbok Berek, another fried chicken, this time Javanese style topped with deep fried savory crumbs. There’s also Rendang Sapi, a tender dry beef curry slow-cooked in a coconut sauce with eggs and topped with shrimp crackers.
Like lots of different tastes? Go for one of the Mini Rijsttafels (literally rice table in Dutch) that includes your choice of one of five entrées plus a corn fritter, spicy hardboiled egg, stir-fry vegetables and rice. If you love peanut sauce, try the Gado Gado, a warm salad with tofu, hardboiled eggs, crackers and a highly addictive savory sauce.
Hooked but don’t want to break the bank? Head for their Lunch Specials Monday-Friday with nine different dishes at truly NoodleTaco prices. Or check out their weekday happy hour. Soon you’ll be crying with the rest of us, “Viva Indonesia!”
