Chinese food is not just Chinese food. Depending on which region the food is from, the flavor profile can range from spicy to bland to soy sauce-heavy to ginger-spiked to Indian spices. It all depends on where the food is from.

Gourmet Noodle Bowl is not from China though it has similarities to Chinese food. It’s Taiwanese. Taiwan, that little yam-shaped island off the coast of China, blends both Chinese cuisine with elements of Japanese cuisine. It’s one tasty combo.

90% of the people who go to Gourmet Noodle Bowl order the hot pot where you cook raw meats and vegetables in a bubbling broth at your table. For the rest of us, there are plenty of other dishes to choose from. One that has sent many a carnivore into pleasure spasms is the Taiwanese Pork Bun or Taiwanese Burger. For only a few bucks, you get a mantou (fluffy steamed bun) split in half and stuffed with braised pork, pickled vegetable, crushed peanuts and cilantro. Heaven in a bun.

Also recommended are the meat pot stickers—a delicate cross between potstickers and gyoza, spicy wontons (yes, they are spicy), cold cucumbers (another Taiwanese staple), ung choy (greens with a hollow stalk) with preserved tofu sauce, and any of the homemade noodle bowls (big enough to serve two). Long live Yam Island!
