If heaven existed in a Home Depot parking lot, this would be it. El Camion serves delicious tacos, burritos, quesadillas, gorditas, mulitas, tortas and tamales out of a cute little black trailer decorated with a string of red chile lights. Eat in your car or dine alfresco at one of the tables.
Order at the front window and pick up from the side window, which also serves as a makeshift salsa bar. When you gather your goods, spoon on some of the innocent-looking creamy lime green sauce that sits in a plastic molcajete. It's spicy hot and seriously addictive.
The gorditas are three thick, handmade tortillas covered with grilled onions, salsa verde, cotija cheese and avocado. For a few bucks more, you can top them with your choice of 10 different meats including carne asada (steak), pollo asado (chicken), carnitas (pork), chorizo (Mexican sausage), lengua (tongue) and cabeza (beef cheeks).
WARNING: The salsa verde on the gorditas can be extremely HOT. You might want to ask for it on the side or left off completely.
The plato de mole is not of this world. Two large pieces of fall-off-the-bone chicken are smothered in a thick, chocolate brown sauce--a complex melding of slightly smoky, slightly sweet, and savory. It's served with rice, a stack of warm corn tortillas and a wedge of avocado. One order will feed one big eater or two medium eaters.
Not to be overlooked are El Camion's sides. The rice and beans is one of our go-to menu items. Their savory black beans are some of the best we've tried. Whatever kind of eater you are, El Camion will not fail to please your palate and your pocketbook.
