Someone famous once said that ice cream tastes so good it should be illegal. If that were true, Bottega Italiana would be the most sought-after speakeasy in Seattle.

The beauty of gelato, Italian ice cream, is it tastes just like its namesake ingredient, but made gorgeously rich and smooth. Pistacchio tastes just like the perfectly toasted green nut. Frutti de Bosco is like eating a bowl of the sweetest, freshest berries. Melone is like biting into the ripest, juiciest cantaloupe.

Flavors change with the seasons. You might be surprised with anguria (watermelon) and hibiscus on a lazy June afternoon or mirtillo (blueberry) on a hot August night. There are also year round flavors such as vaniglia (vanilla), caffe (coffee), caramello (caramel), nocciola (hazelnut) and chocolate, just to name a few. Vegans and people with allergies will rejoice—most of BI’s fruit flavors are dairy, egg and gluten-free. And with a “small,” you can choose two flavors.

Next time you’re walking around Green Lake on a sunny day, stop by this little shop and get a few scoops on a cone. Take a seat outside at one of their café tables or find a grassy knoll. Sit back, close your eyes, and feel the gelato melt in your mouth. You will feel like you’ve been transported to Italy, if only for a moment. Grazie, Bottega Italiana, grazie.
